For Kansas City, MO the ballot is here. I am going through the ballot and familiarizing myself with the candidates and the different items on the ballot. Please please please know what and who you are voting for. This will make your time at the polling place brief, allowing you more time to spend reminding people to vote.
Hi Wyatt, how do you suggest people familiarize themselves with the candidates, other than by reading the tripe their respective campaigns spew out? I've leaned on sites like http://www.votesmart.org/ to help. I also recently found the Radical Reference 2008 Grassroots Media Election Guide http://www.radicalreference.info/2008ElectionGuide. Do you have other suggestions?
I will be honest; I decided in 2004 I wanted Obama to be president in 2008. I saw Obama speak at an NAACP rally in Rock Island. He is the most open and pragmatic politician I have ever come across. I must also admit that I supported Bush in 2000, and have supported many other republicans and libertarians in the past. I am not a democrat is what I am saying.
Even though I do not agree 100% with all of Obama’s proposals, his openness and pragmatism has provided me hope. People talk of his great speaking abilities, but it is his character that inspires me.
One other point to consider is this: Obama has set himself up to be held accountable for his promises. These are not empty like a few suggest. They cannot be since so many who have never voted are voting this year, and that means they have a vested interest in what he does. You can bet that these people are going to be involved in making sure Obama is accountable for his promises.
So for me, it is not a question of Obama vs. McCain or Barr. I have always supported Obama and know that he is going to do what the people demand. McCain is not setup like this; he would not need to be responsive to the populace. Instead he would run a country like Bush, surrounding himself with yes-men and ignoring dissention.
